Addicted To Retail (ATR) presents: Alexander Wang, Bejing.

Launching a second flagship China, the store measures 565 sqm. Spread over two floors of a modern structure in Sanlitun Village, the Chinese capital’s nucleus of high-end lifestyle. The design of the retail space is a collab of Wang and paris-based architect Joseph Dirand, and in terms of aesthetics it’s pretty much an extrapolation of the New York flagship store’s sleek concept, featuring a strong focus on raw materials with an emphasis on marble and bronze used in sculptural statements.

Upon entering shoppers are greeted by the strong elements of these raw materials that create striking statements with a monolithic marble wall cut from one stone and bearing the resemblance to a rorschach inkblot test. Marble reappears in the staircase that is between one polished bronze and one mirrored wall.

A mirrored bronze sculptural prism bisects the upper floor, along with angular walls embedded with multi-faceted bronze shelving. Except for a 1950s vintage de sede black leather sofa on the ground level, all furniture and fixtures are customized, such as the blackened bronze bars, infinity tables of marble plates framed in blackened bronze, and a concrete sofa with goat hair and a leather ottoman with straps.

The new store carries the brand’s entire men’s + women’s collections, in addition to the recently launched objects collection.

Needless to say that with a fashion brand as sought after as Alexander Wang, the invite to the store opening party was Beijing’s hottest ticket of the month. Held in an underground parking right below the new store, it pulled a mixed crowd of celebs, including Zoe Kravitz and her beau Penn Badgley, top model Du Juan, diplo, A$AP Rocky and DJs Paul Devro and Wordy Spinned Records.

The shop is a mash-up of colours, textures and forms. Appealing to young teenage shoppers, the space reflects the Spicy Color brand’s slogan: ‘fashion is play.’ ‘We wanted to compound the space, so customers wouldn’t be bored,’ says designer Kwang-Hyun Han of m4. ‘These fashions are materials and elements that combined to create an atmosphere that gives joy to shoppers.’

Various patterns and hues mix over the floor and walls, while a flexible display system can be moved throughout the space as needed.

Addicted To Retail (ATR): Trend Platter store by Design Systems in Shanghai.

This is a project for a trendy Japanese fashion brand’s chain store in Shanghai. By the juxtaposition of different decoration styles, the design embodies the brand’s characteristics of “variety” and “mix-and-match”, at the same time creates a visual journey for the shoppers.

This project brings out the brand’s features of “variety” and “mix-and-match” via a wide array of trendy design styles ranging from classical and vintage to modern and minimal. The design is intended to create a shopping journey for the customers, in which the different decoration styles unfold layer by layer as one walks through the shop, with the spherical stainless steel counter serving as the “finale” of the journey, giving visual surprise to the customers.

In spite of the varied styles of the clothing items, there is one common theme of them all – “trendiness”. In this chain store, different backgrounds are designed for the display of clothing to create different moods and ambiences, giving different look and feel to the clothing. This further emphasizes the brand’s “mix-and-match” characteristic.

Nowadays, the chemical reaction between clients and designers is taking its striking precedence over designers’ own interpretation and presentation of the sense of space, functionality, and aesthetics in retail design. Clients assist the designers in the understanding of their customers, competitors, core value and market-positioning. In return, designers merge the objective brief with their own innovation to deliver enduring, aesthetical and professional design solutions.

This project is an implementation of such philosophy of client-designer dynamics which is becoming prominent in the Asian market. Moreover, the client is a fashion brand at the forefront of the ongoing changing trends, which has a target market of young people who aspire to be trendsetters. In a sense, the designers of this chain store project have successfully combined their creativity with the client’s characteristics, setting the trend for retail design through the innovative mix-and-match of styles and the creation of an intriguing shopping journey.

Design by Design Systems.

Addicted To Retail (ATR) presents: Waffles shoe store by Beaverhausen, Brussels.

The following details are from Beaverhausen:

The name ‘Waffles’ is a tribute to vintage sneakers from the ‘70s and a promise to potential customers that their feet are in for a real treat. We wanted to craft an environment similar to that of a candy store. White tiles covering both the wall behind the counter and the counter itself generate the desired atmosphere.

All shelves are in the form of simplified waffles: the material used is coated foam, which refers to the pliancy of sneaker soles, especially those found on earlier models. A reflective backdrop allows shoppers to see shoes from both sides. What’s more, the experience of shopping at Waffles is enhanced with the delicious aroma of waffles sprayed throughout the shop each day.

Addicted To Retail (ATR) presents: Levi’s Flagship Store – Paris.

After launching in San Francisco, New York and London, Levi’s has opened a massive flagship store in Paris.

The store measures a whopping 650 sqm. spread over three floors, and boasts a sustainable interior design that fuses a vintage and industrial look and feel. In sync with modern times, FSC-certified woods have been used wherever possible, and the store is filled with reclaimed, reused, restored and existing materials. The design also references the ties between the U.S. and France through denim. One of the flagship’s special features is an in-house denim tailor where shoppers can have their new denim trophies customized. To celebrate the opening, popular music legends Busy P, James Murphy, André Saraiva and Shepard Fairey share their love for each other’s cultures, creative spirits and homelands through music and art-themed installations, limited-edition apparel and a series of events, screenings and interactive workshops.

The new Levi’s flagship carries the brand’s full range of merchandise, including several of its special denim lines.

Addicted To Retail (ATR) presents: Camper Lyon by Studio Makkink & Bey.

When Dutch designers Rianne Makkink and Jurgen Bey were commissioned by Camper to design a footwear store in Lyon, France, they appropriately looked to the basic movements of walking for inspiration.

‘Walking, as the most primary way of moving through space, has shaped the interior design with its lines of movement and the physical structures that form the landscapes in which we walk,’ Bey says.

The shop is filled with the illusion of walkable spaces, as graphic line drawings of staircases, stepladders and ladders cover the walls and floors. Amongst these images there are also real stairs and stools amongst the store – outlined with red edges – which are used to display shoes or offer shoppers a place to sit and try products.

‘To achieve modularity, we’ve designed furniture in various sizes and made the entire structure stand on its own: it’s a box that slots inside the existing store space,’ Makkink explains. The ‘prêt-à-porter’ designs can be moved throughout the store, adding to the shop’s mixed sense of perspective.

The store measures a spacious 263 sqm., spread over two floors of a modern low-rise building. The east meets west interior design concept – a collab effort of architecture practice Light-inc and Onitsuka Tiger’s very own Ryoji Shoda – blends different aesthetic elements, pairing bamboo herringbone parquet with carefully sourced European furniture and fixtures. Literally framed by the concrete and glass structure, the result is a sophisticated yet laid-back retail space that’s very compatible with Onitsuka Tiger’s brand values. The ground floor features a sneaker wall, apparel items and select merchandise.

The sizeable cashier’s desk with built-in watch cabinet stands out even more because it’s placed in front of a black concrete wall that prominently features the brand’s feline symbol. A robust concrete staircase leads to the first floor, and halfway a wall-mounted TV screen features short films of products. Upstairs is hardcore sneaker heaven with an abundance of models in a playful setting that combines a latticed ceiling with a shiny white epoxy resin floor. Taking center stage is a display crafted by creative collective magma which doubles as a table tennis table. A giant flaming Keirin shoe by artist Noriyuki Fukushima adorns an entire wall, while a screen next to seating corner with a comfy leather sofa airs episodes of the cool nippon made series.
